Flag Day (Brazil)
19 November 2026 — The wind unfurls my sail — look at the sky I carry!
On 19 November Brazil marks Flag Day. On that date in 1889, four days after the republic was proclaimed on 15 November, the new national flag was adopted. It has a green field with a yellow rhombus, and inside it a blue circle with a white band bearing the motto “Ordem e Progresso” (“Order and Progress”). What stargazers love most is that the circle is a real sky map: it shows the stars over Rio de Janeiro at 8:30 a.m. on 15 November 1889, including the Southern Cross and other bright stars, but mirrored, as if seen from outside the celestial sphere. Each star stands for a state or the Federal District, and there are now 27 of them. The number has changed with the country's administrative divisions: originally there were 21. On this day, schools and public places hold ceremonies in honour of the flag.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver flag made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, billowing across the sky like a sail
