Arbor Day (China)
12 March 2026 — One sapling today, a whole forest tomorrow! Plant something green too!
Arbor Day in China is observed every year on 12 March. It has been official since 1979, when the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress adopted a resolution designating 12 March as China's Tree-Planting Day. The date is linked to the memory of Sun Yat-sen, who died on 12 March 1925 and was a known supporter of afforestation. In 1981 a further decision called on every able-bodied citizen aged 11 and over to take part in voluntary tree planting. On this day schools, organisations and families plant saplings in parks, along streets and by rivers. The date falls at the start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere: the spring equinox comes around 20 March, and in the traditional Chinese solar calendar the period around 5 March is called Jingzhe (Awakening of Insects), when the soil warms and planting season begins.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a smiling child holding a small spade and a tiny sapling, whose tip sprouts a twinkling star-shaped twig
