Brazilian Valentine's Day

12 June 2026 — Two hearts, one path across the sky! Love one another!

In Brazil, Dia dos Namorados (Lovers' Day) is celebrated on 12 June rather than 14 February. It falls on the eve of the feast of Saint Anthony (13 June), who in Brazilian tradition is regarded as the patron saint of marriage and lovers. It is often said that the date was promoted in the 1940s by the advertising executive João Doria as a commercial campaign, but this should be verified. Couples exchange gifts, cards, flowers and chocolates, and go out for dinner. Around the holiday there are also the playful “simpatias” of Saint Anthony, folk rituals for finding a partner, such as writing names on slips of paper. The date is fixed and falls in mid-June, shortly before the start of astronomical winter in the Southern Hemisphere (around 21 June), when the nights are among the longest of the year and well suited for stargazing. So two heart-shaped lanterns will drift across the sky together.

Flying across the sky: Two ethereal, bluish-silver heart-shaped paper lanterns made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky
