Teachers' Day (Turkey)

24 November 2026 — Today's lesson is stars! My chalk is still glowing.

In Turkey, Teachers' Day is celebrated on 24 November, not on 5 October, when World Teachers' Day falls. The date is linked to the writing reform: on 1 November 1928 a law introduced a new Turkish alphabet based on the Latin script, and on 24 November that year Mustafa Kemal Atatürk accepted the title of „Head Teacher“ (Başöğretmen) of the new nation schools for adult literacy. 24 November was officially declared Teachers' Day in 1981. In that period Atatürk travelled the country with a blackboard, teaching people the new letters. Today pupils give flowers, cards and words of thanks to their teachers, and schools hold ceremonies and programmes. The day recalls how a new alphabet turned a whole society into one big classroom. The holiday has no connection to the sky itself, but our chalk-drawing teacher sketches constellations on the dark board of the night, because the stars were among the first things people ever learned to read.
