Teachers' Day (Mexico)

15 May 2026 — Thank you to every teacher who showed us how to read the sky!

In Mexico, Teachers' Day (Día del Maestro) is celebrated every year on 15 May, separately from World Teachers' Day on 5 October. The date was set by a decree in 1917. It is often noted that 15 May coincides with the anniversary of the capture of Querétaro by republican forces in 1867, during the struggle against the Second Mexican Empire. On this day students usually bring flowers, cards and small gifts, and many schools hold ceremonies, songs and shared meals. Teachers often get a day off, though the exact arrangements are announced by the authorities each year. The day highlights the role of teachers in society, especially in small communities where the school is the heart of local life. The holiday has a fixed date in the solar calendar and does not depend on the phases of the Moon. So on 15 May, look up at the sky and think of those who taught us to ask questions.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a flying chalkboard outlined in stars, with a glowing apple and tiny child-like star drawings floating around it
