Teachers' Day (India)

5 September 2026 — Today the blackboard counts the stars, and every one gets top marks!

Teachers' Day in India is observed every year on 5 September, the birthday of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, born in 1888: a philosopher, scholar and later the second President of India. According to the widely told story, when students and friends asked to celebrate his birthday, he suggested honouring all teachers instead. It has been observed nationwide since 1962, the year Radhakrishnan became President; it is not a public holiday. In schools and universities, students offer flowers, cards and words of thanks, hold cultural programmes, and sometimes older pupils take over lessons and play the teacher for a day. The government also presents national awards to outstanding educators. The date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar and does not depend on the Moon or the seasons. It is also a lovely reminder that teachers, like the stars overhead, show the way to anyone who looks up and wants to learn.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and connecting lines, like a constellation: a floating blackboard outlined in starlight, with a piece of chalk drawing small glowing stars on it by itself
