World Creativity and Innovation Day

21 April 2026 — One small idea can light up a whole sky! What is yours?

World Creativity and Innovation Day is observed every year on 21 April. It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in a 2017 resolution and has been marked since 2018. The aim is to remind us that creative thinking is a valuable resource for sustainable development and for tackling big challenges, from education and health to protecting nature. The day builds on an earlier initiative that began in Canada in 2001, proposed by Marci Segal. Traditions are open and informal: workshops, exhibitions, young inventors' contests, and discussions in schools and universities. The date is fixed in the calendar and is not tied to the Moon or the solstices, yet the starry sky has long inspired people to ask “what if?”, from the first star maps to today's telescopes and satellites.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a light-bulb shape with two wide feathered wings, drifting across the night sky and leaving tiny sparks that bloom into new stars
