Turkish Language Day

26 September 2026 — The letters took flight like a flock – let us arrange a word together!

Turkish Language Day (Dil Bayramı) is observed on 26 September, marking the opening of the First Turkish Language Congress in Istanbul in 1932. The idea came from Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and the congress began organised work on studying and developing the language. The Turkish Language Society (Türk Dil Kurumu – TDK) was also founded in 1932. The day was first celebrated as a language festival, and today it is marked with exhibitions, conferences, readings and contests in eloquence and spelling. The date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar, so it does not follow the Moon, but it falls shortly after the September equinox, when day and night are almost equal – a fitting moment for fresh starts. A flock of letters arranging themselves into words recalls how language travels from voice to voice, like birds across the sky.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver flock of birds made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky
