China Tourism Day
19 May 2026 — Every great journey begins with one step and one scroll!
China Tourism Day is observed on 19 May and has been celebrated since 2011. The date honours Xu Xiake (1587–1641), a renowned Ming-dynasty traveller and travel writer. On 19 May 1613 he set out on the journey that began his famous travel diaries, known as the Travels of Xu Xiake. Over many years he explored mountains, rivers and caves, carefully recording landforms, rocks and waterways. For this reason he is often regarded as a symbol of travel in China. On this day, the country holds exhibitions, cultural events and campaigns promoting responsible tourism, and some attractions offer free or discounted entry. Today the holiday falls on a fixed Gregorian date, although the original day in 1613 was recorded in the traditional lunar calendar and later converted. Under the stars, the old travel writer with his staff and scroll becomes a companion to anyone who loves discovering new places.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation moving across the sky: a lone traveller in a wide straw hat, leaning on a walking staff, with a small scroll-diary at his side
