Labour Day
1 May 2026 — Hands rest today and the basket is full. Off on a picnic!
Labour Day is marked on 1 May and is linked to the workers' struggle for an eight-hour working day. Its roots lie in the Chicago strikes of 1886, and in 1889 the Second Socialist International named 1 May a day of workers' solidarity. In Serbia, 1 and 2 May are official non-working days. Besides formal gatherings, people traditionally head out into nature for outings and picnics, grilling meat outdoors and meeting friends and family. In Serbia such outings are often called „prvomajski uranak“ (an early May Day outing). The date also sits well in the sky's calendar: 1 May falls roughly midway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, when days are long and warm, and in the evening the bright stars of Taurus and Gemini can still be glimpsed in the west. So a picnic often ends under the first stars.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of light dots and thin lines, like a constellation walking across the sky: a cheerful craftsman in a flat cap carrying a picnic basket on his arm, with a gentle stride and a tiny glimmering tool at his belt
