Labour Day
1 May 2026 — For those who work, even the stars shine brighter. Happy Labour Day and International Workers' Solidarity Day! Happy Labour Day!
May 1 is a day on which many countries honour work and the rights of working people. Its roots lie in the nineteenth-century labour movement and the 1886 strikes in Chicago for an eight-hour working day. In 1889 a congress of the Second International (an association of workers' parties) called for an international demonstration on May 1, 1890, and it soon became an annual event. In Bulgaria it is an official day off under Article 154 of the Labour Code. People traditionally take part in marches, outdoor gatherings and festive events, and for many it is also one of the first warm days for a walk outside. The date falls in the heart of spring, roughly halfway between the March equinox and the June solstice, as nights grow shorter and gentler for stargazing. Early May also brings the Eta Aquariids, a meteor shower linked to Halley's Comet, which usually peaks in the first week of the month – from Bulgaria it is best seen in the hours before dawn.
