St George's Day

23 April 2026 — The knight and the dragon pass beneath the stars – happy St George's Day, England!

On 23 April England marks St George's Day, honouring its patron saint. According to tradition, George was a Christian martyr of Roman times, and later medieval legends added the tale of him defeating a dragon, making him a symbol of courage and protection. His cult grew in England during the Middle Ages, and in the 14th century King Edward III linked his name with the Order of the Garter. The red cross on a white field, known as St George's Cross, is the flag of England and forms part of the Union Flag. Today the day is marked with parades, flags and red roses, but it is not a public holiday. The date also coincides with Shakespeare's traditionally celebrated birthday; what is documented is that he was baptised on 26 April 1564. In the Northern Hemisphere it falls in mid-spring, when the days are already growing long.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure of a knight made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky, carrying a flowing banner marked with a cross of glowing points
