St David's Day

1 March 2026 — Daffodil and leek fly together – Happy St David's Day, Wales!

St David's Day (in Welsh, Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant) is celebrated on 1 March in honour of the patron saint of Wales. David was a churchman and bishop in Wales in the 6th century, and tradition says he died on 1 March. The day is marked with parades and concerts, and many people wear a yellow daffodil or a leek on their lapels, the two national emblems of Wales. Children often go to school in traditional Welsh costume, and families may prepare familiar dishes such as cawl, a hearty soup. The date is fixed and does not follow a lunar calendar. It arrives as winter gives way to spring, just when daffodils begin to bloom, which makes the yellow flower a fitting sign of the day. So across the starry sky the two emblems travel together, like a small constellation honouring Wales.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver daffodil made of pale glowing dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky
