St Andrew's Day
30 November 2026 — Happy St Andrew's Day, Scotland! May there be music and dancing under the stars!
St Andrew's Day is observed on 30 November and is Scotland's national day. Saint Andrew was one of the twelve apostles and, according to tradition, was crucified on an X-shaped cross. That is why the Scottish flag, known as the Saltire, shows a white diagonal cross on a blue field. Andrew has been regarded as Scotland's patron saint since the Middle Ages, and he is also mentioned in the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320. Since 2007 the day has been a bank holiday in Scotland, although employers are not required to give it as a day off and many people work. If 30 November falls on a weekend, the bank holiday moves to the following Monday. People mark it with concerts, dinners of Scottish food and ceilidhs (traditional Scottish gatherings with music and group dancing). The other national emblem, the thistle, decorates many greetings and displays. The day falls in late November, when the nights are long and the sky is full of stars, which makes a cross drifting among them a fitting symbol.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation: a diagonal saltire cross drifting across the night sky, with a small thistle-shaped constellation floating beside it
