St Dwynwen's Day

25 January 2026 — Love comes carved in wood and given with a warm heart. Happy St Dwynwen's Day!

St Dwynwen's Day is celebrated on 25 January in Wales and is the Welsh festival of lovers. Dwynwen is the patron saint of love and of lovers. Tradition places her in the 5th century and calls her a daughter of King Brychan Brycheiniog. The stories about her vary, and historians cannot confirm every detail. She is most often linked with Llanddwyn Island off Anglesey, where a church and shrine were said to stand in her honour. Today people exchange cards and gifts. A favourite present is the Welsh love spoon: a wooden spoon, hand-carved with symbols such as hearts, keys and chains. Giving one as a token of affection is a long-standing custom. The festival falls on a fixed calendar date and does not depend on the phases of the Moon. On cold midwinter evenings it brings a little warmth and romance beneath the stars of Wales.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, shaped as a carved Welsh love spoon with a tiny glowing heart in its bowl
