Students' Day

23 May 2026 — The backpack is ready – The backpack is ready – today's lesson: take a break!

Students' Day in Mexico is marked on 23 May and is dedicated to those who study. The date is usually linked to the student movement of 1929: on 23 May that year protesting students clashed with police, and their strike led to the autonomy of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). How the day is marked varies by region and institution. In many schools and universities the day brings a break from lessons or a festive programme: concerts, sports contests, exhibitions and get-togethers among classmates. The emphasis is often on the value of knowledge and education for society. It is not an official national day off, so practice depends on the individual school. There is no astronomical link: the date is fixed in the civil calendar and does not follow the Moon's phases or the solstice. Still, late spring is a season of exams and graduations, and the night sky is a fine companion for anyone studying in the evening: sailors of old learned to find their way by the constellations.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and lines, like a constellation: a little backpack with tiny walking legs, with pencils and notebooks sparkling out of it as it drifts across the night sky
