Sports Day (Japan)

12 October 2026 · movable holiday — Ready, set, go! I'm racing across the sky with a star torch!

Sports Day in Japan is a national holiday held on the second Monday of October. It is linked to the opening of the Tokyo Summer Olympics on 10 October 1964. The holiday was first called Health and Sports Day and was observed on 10 October. In 2000 the date became movable, creating a long weekend, and since 2020 the name has been simply Sports Day. Its purpose is to encourage sport and a healthy lifestyle. Around this time many schools, kindergartens and communities hold sports festivals (called undōkai in Japanese), with relay races, tug-of-war and team games, and children often wear red and white headbands. The holiday has nothing to do with the lunar calendar, but it falls in autumn, when the weather is usually clear and pleasant for competitions, and evenings are good for stargazing. In 2026 it falls on 12 October.
