International Day of the Celebration of the Solstice

21 June 2026 — I don't want to set! Today is the longest day!

The International Day of the Celebration of the Solstice is observed on 21 June and appears on the United Nations list of international days. The solstice is the moment when the Sun reaches its northernmost position relative to the celestial equator and stands directly over the Tropic of Cancer. In the Northern Hemisphere it brings the longest day of the year and marks the astronomical start of summer, while in the Southern Hemisphere it is the shortest day and the start of winter. The exact moment falls on 20 or 21 June depending on the year and time zone, so 21 June is only approximate. Since ancient times, people around the world have marked this day with bonfires, songs, dances and wreaths of herbs and flowers. Ancient sites such as Stonehenge in the United Kingdom are associated with watching the solstice sunrise. In Bulgaria, Enyovden, on 24 June, is also linked to the summer solstice: people gather healing herbs, weave wreaths and it is believed to be a day of strength and health. Look at the evening sky: the Sun seems in no hurry to leave.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a smiling sun with a wreath of herbs and flowers around its head
