The holidays of the sky

📻

Shōwa Day

29 April 2026 — The old radio hums softly while the twig grows. We remember and look ahead.

Shōwa Day is observed in Japan every year on 29 April. It is the birthday of Emperor Hirohito (1901–1989), whose reign is known as the Shōwa era (1926–1989). Until 1988 the day was celebrated as the Emperor's Birthday, and after his death it became Greenery Day (Midori no Hi). In 2007 Greenery Day moved to 4 May, and 29 April was renamed Shōwa Day. Its purpose is to encourage reflection on the turbulent decades of that era and on the path the country has taken since. The day also opens Golden Week, a cluster of holidays at the end of April and the start of May when many people travel and rest with their families. The holiday follows the Gregorian calendar, so it is not tied to any lunar phase. Still, in late April Orion sets early in the evening sky, while the summer constellations begin to climb toward the dawn.
