April Fools' Day

1 April 2026 — Oops! I'm no comet, just a star. But you fell for it, didn't you?

April 1st is a day of harmless pranks and laughter in many countries around the world, including Bulgaria. The exact origin of the tradition is unclear, and historians offer several explanations. One of the best-known theories links it to calendar changes in 16th-century Europe, when a decree by King Charles IX (1564) moved the start of the year in France to January 1st, and those who still celebrated it in late March and early April became the target of jokes. Other researchers see a connection with older spring festivals of merriment. In many countries people play tricks on each other until noon or all day long, while newspapers, radio stations and websites publish made-up news stories. In Bulgaria the day is also linked to the town of Gabrovo: on April 1st, 1972, the House of Humour and Satire opened there. The holiday falls in early April, shortly after the spring equinox, when in the Northern Hemisphere days are longer than nights and the spring constellations rise in the evening sky. If you want to play a prank, keep it kind and make sure nobody gets hurt.
