Cesar Chavez Day
31 March 2026 — Those who sow with toil reap with dignity. Long live the work of the land!
Cesar Chavez Day is observed on March 31, the date of his birth in 1927. Chavez was an American labor leader and a champion of farm workers' rights. Together with Dolores Huerta, he founded the organization that later became the United Farm Workers (UFW). He was known for nonviolent methods: strikes, marches, boycotts and fasting. The day is an official state holiday in California, while other states mark it in different ways, for example with commemorative or educational events. It is not a federal public holiday. It is often an occasion for volunteering and community service connected with labor and justice. The date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar and does not depend on lunar phases or solstices. A worker in a straw hat with a basket of grapes passes across the sky. The grapes recall the Delano grape strike (1965–1970) and the grape boycott, which made Chavez’s movement known across the country.
