Saci Day
31 October 2026 — Hop, hop! Saci whirls among the stars. Can you catch his cap?
Saci (Saci-Pererê in Portuguese) is one of the best-known figures of Brazilian folklore: a nimble one-legged boy with a red cap and a pipe. According to the tales, his cap gives him magical power, and he appears inside whirlwinds, playing small pranks: hiding objects, tossing salt into the food, scaring the cattle. The figure has roots among the Tupi-Guarani peoples, later blended with African and European influences. Saci Day is marked on 31 October – officially in the state of São Paulo and in some Brazilian municipalities. The idea is to celebrate the country's own folk tradition rather than only the imported Halloween held on the same date. Schools and libraries hold readings and performances. The writer Monteiro Lobato did much to popularise the figure: in 1917 he gathered stories about Saci through a survey of readers of the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. Calendar link: the date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon or the solstices.
