Revolution Day

16 November 2026 · movable holiday — A ribbon, a torch and a brisk stride – happy holiday, Mexico!

Mexican Revolution Day commemorates 20 November 1910, the date Francisco Madero set in his Plan de San Luis Potosí (a political manifesto) for the start of an uprising against the rule of Porfirio Díaz. This marked the start of the Mexican Revolution, a long period of profound change in the country. Today the holiday is official and a day off work. The date is movable: it is observed on the third Monday of November, which creates a long weekend. A traditional part of the celebrations is the parade in the capital on 20 November itself, with athletes, gymnasts and runners taking part. The holiday follows the civil calendar and is not tied to any particular astronomical event, though late autumn is a fine season for stargazing in the northern hemisphere. Today two athletes inspired by the parade cross the sky.
