Republic Day
29 October 2026 — Lanterns glow above the Bosphorus – happy Republic Day, Türkiye!
On 29 October 1923 the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye proclaimed the country a republic, and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was elected its first president. This completed the transition from the Ottoman Empire (the sultanate had already been abolished in 1922) and gave birth to the new state with Ankara as its capital. The day is a national holiday, marked with ceremonies, parades, flag-raising and concerts. In the evening, cities hold lantern and torch processions, and fireworks light up the sky above Istanbul, Ankara and elsewhere. Celebrations begin at midday on 28 October, which is a half-day holiday. Northern Cyprus also observes the day. The holiday follows the solar calendar, so it falls on the same date every year. Late October nights are long and often clear, so the glow of lanterns and fireworks looks like an earthly constellation answering the stars above.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver procession of luminous dots and thin lines forming a row of small lanterns, drifting across the night sky like a moving constellation
