Republic Day (Festa della Repubblica)
2 June 2026 — Nine little planes paint a tricolour ribbon over Rome – happy holiday, Italy! – happy holiday, Italy!
Republic Day (Festa della Repubblica) is celebrated in Italy every year on 2 June. It commemorates the referendum of 2–3 June 1946, when Italians chose between monarchy and republic. A majority voted for a republic, and women took part in a national vote for the first time. This ended the rule of the House of Savoy and set the country on the path to a new constitution, which came into force in 1948. The day is a public holiday. The main event is the military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome, after the head of state lays a wreath at the Altar of the Fatherland. Over the city flies the aerobatic team Frecce Tricolori (the “Tricolour Arrows”), leaving a trail of green, white and red smoke, the colours of the flag. The gardens of the Quirinale, the presidential palace, are also opened to visitors. The date is fixed and does not follow the lunar calendar, but on a clear evening around 2 June the first summer constellations begin to appear.
Flying across the sky: Nine ethereal, bluish-silver aircraft made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation flying in a tight V formation across the night sky
