Republic Day

26 January 2026 — I left the Delhi parade and wandered all the way to the stars! Happy Republic Day!

Republic Day is celebrated in India every year on 26 January. On that date in 1950 the Constitution of India came into force and the country became a republic. The date was chosen symbolically: on 26 January 1930 the Indian National Congress had declared the goal of complete independence (Purna Swaraj). Independence from British rule itself came on 15 August 1947, and the new constitution replaced the earlier dominion status. The main celebration is a grand ceremony and parade along the Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) in New Delhi. Military units, floats showing the culture of the different states and groups of folk dancers pass by, and decorated camels often take part in the procession. The President of India lays a wreath and takes the salute. The holiday has a fixed date in the solar calendar and does not depend on the phases of the Moon, yet it carries a spirit of hope and unity. So our camel carries that spirit all the way to the heavens.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver camel made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation, striding slowly across the night sky
