Women's Equality Day

26 August 2026 — Every vote counts – and yours has a place in the sky!

On 26 August 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was officially certified, a week after it had been ratified by the required number of states. It prohibits denying the right to vote on the basis of sex, giving women the vote nationwide. It was the fruit of decades of struggle: meetings, petitions, marches and speeches by suffragists such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and Alice Paul. It is worth remembering that in practice many women from minority groups still faced obstacles to voting for a long time. Women's Equality Day was designated by Congress in 1973 on the initiative of Congresswoman Bella Abzug, and U.S. presidents have issued a proclamation for it each year since. It is marked with exhibitions, talks, voter registration drives and marches. The day falls on a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar and has no direct link to solstices or moon phases, but under the August sky we can recall that every star, even a small one, adds light to the whole picture.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation walking across the sky: a woman in a long skirt with a sash across her shoulder, holding a small ballot paper high in one hand
