International Translation Day

30 September 2026 — One star, many words – and they all shine!

International Translation Day is observed every year on 30 September. The date is linked to St Jerome, translator of the Bible into Latin, who according to tradition died on 30 September 420 and is honoured as the patron saint of translators. The day grew out of an initiative of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), founded in 1953, and in 2017 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring it an international day. Its purpose is to recognise the work of translators, editors and interpreters, who connect peoples and cultures and let knowledge travel between languages. In the calendar it falls in early autumn, shortly after the September equinox, when day and night are nearly equal and the nights begin to grow longer than the days. Just as every culture names the stars in its own way, words sound different from language to language, yet they point to the same sky.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver quill made of pale glowing dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky
