International Talk Like a Pirate Day

19 September 2026 — Ahoy, star wanderer! Fair winds and clear skies!

Talk Like a Pirate Day is a lighthearted holiday observed every year on 19 September. It was invented in 1995 by two Americans, John Baur and Mark Summers, during a game of racquetball, when they decided to talk like pirates and liked the idea. It became widely known after 2002, when the humorist Dave Barry wrote about it in his newspaper column. Since then people around the world have swapped playful pirate cries such as “Ahoy!” and “Arr!”, dressed up as sea rovers and held cheerful gatherings. The day is unofficial and is not tied to any astronomical event, as the date was chosen for personal reasons. Still, sailors have long navigated by the stars, and in the age of sail the North Star helped ships find their way, so the night sky is a fitting place for a pirate ship.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation figure made of luminous dots and fine lines: a folk pirate with an eye patch and a parrot on his shoulder, sailing a little star-ship across the night sky
