Pioneer Day

24 July 2026 — A long road, one wagon and many stars – welcome to the valley!

Pioneer Day is celebrated on 24 July in the US state of Utah and is an official state holiday. It commemorates 24 July 1847, when Brigham Young and the first company of Latter-day Saint settlers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley after a long journey by covered wagon across the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. Today the day is marked with parades, rodeos, fireworks, picnics and performances, and many people remember the hardship and labour of the early settlers. Some towns feature processions with wagons, riders and marching bands. The date is fixed and does not depend on the moon or the solstice, but it falls in high summer, when nights are short and warm. The Milky Way is then easy to see from dark places away from city lights, just as it was for travellers who spent the night beside their wagons on the prairie almost two centuries ago.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation figure made of bright dots and fine lines: a covered wagon with an arched canvas top and two big spoked wheels, rolling slowly along the Milky Way
