National Foundation Day

11 February 2026 — The sun rises over the mountain – happy National Foundation Day, Japan!

National Foundation Day (Kenkoku Kinen no Hi) is celebrated in Japan every year on 11 February. According to the ancient chronicle Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), the legendary first emperor, Jimmu, took the throne in 660 BCE. This is a tradition rather than established historical fact. The holiday was abolished in 1948, after the Second World War, and was reinstated in 1966 under its current name, taking effect in 1967. It is a public holiday, so people rest, and quiet ceremonies and gatherings are often held. Flags of Japan are raised in many places. The day falls at the end of winter, when daylight is clearly getting longer and the sun rises a little earlier each morning. The rising sun, which is also the image on the Japanese flag, is therefore a fitting symbol. The date follows the solar calendar, not the lunar one, so it is the same every year.
