Brazilian Independence Day

7 September 2026 — A fair wind and stars in the tail – happy holiday, Brazil!

On 7 September Brazil marks the declaration of its independence from Portugal in 1822. According to tradition, Prince Regent Dom Pedro, later Emperor Pedro I, proclaimed the break with the mother country near the Ipiranga brook, in what is now the São Paulo area. This moment is known as the “Cry of Ipiranga”. The day is an official holiday across the country. It is celebrated with military and civic parades, music, concerts and street festivities, with the biggest processions in Brasília, the capital, and Rio de Janeiro. The colours of the day are the green and yellow of the national flag. The blue circle on the flag shows stars of the southern sky, arranged as they appeared over Rio de Janeiro on 15 November 1889, the day the republic was proclaimed. This makes the starry sky a natural link between the holiday and Astronativa. Among the stars is the Southern Cross, a symbol of the southern hemisphere.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal green-and-gold kite made of bright dots and fine lines like a constellation, drifting across the night sky with a long trailing tail of small stars
