🇮🇹

National Unity, Constitution, Anthem and Flag Day

17 March 2026 — Hop, hop across the stars! Hop, hop across the stars! Italy is united, and today it celebrates!

On 17 March 1861, in Turin, the law passed by the first Italian parliament was promulgated, making Victor Emmanuel II King of Italy. This marked the birth of the unified state after the movement known as the Risorgimento (Italian for „Resurgence“). The day is observed as National Unity, Constitution, Anthem and Flag Day. It celebrates the symbols of the republic: the green, white and red tricolour flag, the anthem „Il Canto degli Italiani“ („The Song of the Italians“, also called „Mameli's Hymn“), and the constitution. It is marked with ceremonies, flag-raising and school events. It is a civic celebration rather than a public day off. In 2011, for the 150th anniversary of unification, 17 March was declared a one-off public holiday, and in 2012 a law established it as the annual National Unity, Constitution, Anthem and Flag Day. The date is fixed in the solar calendar, and in mid-March the evening sky still shows winter constellations such as Orion and Gemini.
