National Sovereignty and Children's Day
23 April 2026 — The kite flies high – let every child in the world join the dance!
On 23 April 1920, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey met for the first time in Ankara. It took charge of the country during a difficult period and laid the foundations of a new state; the republic was proclaimed in 1923. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk later dedicated this day to children, presenting them as the future of the nation. Today it is an official public holiday in Turkey. Schools hold ceremonies and concerts, and children symbolically take seats in parliament and in public offices. By tradition, children's groups from many countries visit Turkey and perform songs and dances in folk costumes. Streets are decorated with Turkish flags, and children draw pictures and fly kites. The holiday is celebrated every year on 23 April, in spring, when the days grow longer., in spring, when the days grow longer and the sky is just right for kites and stargazing.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation of light dots and thin lines forming a ring of dancing children in folk costumes of many lands, holding the string of a glowing kite that drifts across the starry sky like a moving constellation
