International Day of the Girl Child

11 October 2026 — Look up – there is room in the sky for every dream!

The International Day of the Girl Child is observed every year on 11 October. The UN General Assembly established it by a resolution in December 2011, and it was first marked in 2012. Its purpose is to draw attention to girls' rights and to the obstacles they face in accessing education and health care, in protection from violence, and in equal opportunities to speak up and lead. Each year the UN chooses a theme, and around the world schools, organisations and communities hold events, exhibitions and campaigns. Some landmark buildings around the world are lit up in pink in support. The day also has a natural link with science: girls who look up at the stars are the astronomers, engineers and researchers of tomorrow. That is why a girl with a telescope, riding a comet, crosses our sky. The date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon or the solstices, but autumn nights around it are often clear and good for stargazing. Look up, and let every girl know that the sky belongs to her too.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a moving constellation: a girl with a small telescope on her shoulder, riding a comet with a shimmering tail and waving
