Youth Day (China)

4 May 2026 — A book in hand, a kite to the stars. Where there is curiosity, there is a way!

Youth Day in China is held on 4 May and traces back to the May Fourth Movement of 1919. That year thousands of students in Beijing took to the streets to protest the decisions of the Paris Peace Conference concerning former German holdings in Shandong province. The protest grew into a broad cultural and political movement calling for science, education and the renewal of society. In December 1949 the government of the new People’s Republic of China designated 4 May as Youth Day, giving young people over 14 a half day off. A later official clarification specified the age range as 14 to 28. The day is usually marked with ceremonies, gatherings, volunteer activities and speeches addressed to young people. The date follows the Gregorian calendar and is the same every year, so it has no direct link to the lunar calendar or to any astronomical event. Still, a kite rising toward the stars is a fitting image of aspiration and of curiosity about knowledge.
