Mother's Day
10 May 2026 · movable holiday — I'm flying across the sky with a flower for every mom!
Mother's Day in the United States falls on the second Sunday of May. It grew out of the efforts of Anna Jarvis of West Virginia, who wanted to honor her own mother and the work of all mothers. The first celebration she organized took place in 1908. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the day a national holiday. The carnation is its symbol, and a white one is often linked with the memory of a mother who has passed away. Today people give cards and flowers, share a family breakfast or lunch, and simply spend time together. The holiday is movable because it is tied to a day of the week rather than a fixed date, so it shifts between May 8 and 14, always on a Sunday. It is a lovely spring Sunday to look up at the sky and think of those who gave us our first light.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver carnation made of luminous dots and fine lines, drifting across the night sky like a moving constellation
