Mother's Day (Turkey)

Anneler Günü, Mother's Day, is celebrated in Turkey on the second Sunday of May. The idea of a day honouring mothers spread through the twentieth century from the United States to many countries, and in Turkey it became an established secular family holiday. The holiday became widely celebrated in the second half of the twentieth century.
Today children give their mothers flowers (often carnations or roses), small gifts and handmade cards. Families often gather around a table with sweets and tea, and schools and kindergartens teach little poems and songs about mothers.
The holiday is movable: it follows the rule “second Sunday of May”, so the date changes every year . In 2026 it falls on 10 May. The May sky is a lovely backdrop for such a warm occasion; in the evening you can look for the first summer constellations.
