Mother's Day

10 May 2026 — Good morning, Mom! This serenade is for you, with flowers and song!

In Mexico, Mother's Day (Día de las Madres) is celebrated every year on 10 May, whatever the day of the week. The celebration took hold in the 1920s, when a newspaper campaign called for honouring mothers, and it has since become one of the country's most beloved family days. Many families begin the morning with a surprise: musicians, often mariachi bands, sing the traditional song Las Mañanitas (a greeting song also sung on birthdays) beneath the mother's window. Then come bouquets, gifts, a shared lunch and family gatherings, and many churches hold thanksgiving services. The date follows the ordinary solar calendar, so it does not depend on moon phases. In May the northern sky shows its spring constellations and the days are long and warm, which makes an early serenade even more pleasant.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a small band of mariachi musicians in wide sombreros, with a guitar, a violin and a trumpet, carrying a bouquet of flowers
