Mother's Day
10 May 2026 · movable holiday — This azalea is for Mum! I'm carrying it across the whole sky.
In Italy, Mother's Day (Festa della mamma) is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Among the earliest celebrations in Italy were one in Bordighera (Liguria) in 1956, promoted by senator Raul Zaccari, and one in the small town of Tordibetto near Assisi (Umbria) on 12 May 1957, initiated by the local priest Don Otello Migliosi; the idea soon spread across the country. It is a family, secular holiday: children make cards and drawings, and relatives gather for a shared lunch. The best-known gift is the azalea, a potted flower that for decades has been sold to support cancer research through the charity AIRC (the Italian Association for Cancer Research). The date is movable and follows the second-Sunday rule, so it falls on a different day each year, between 8 and 14 May. It comes in spring, when many garden flowers bloom and the nights grow shorter and warmer, a good moment to look up at the sky and think of loved ones. In 2026 the holiday falls on 10 May.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure of a small child made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky, carrying a huge potted azalea whose blossoms are traced in glowing star-points
