Mother's Day

10 May 2026 · movable holiday — Flowers for Mom! And a paper heart, made with lots of love.

Mother's Day in Germany, known as Muttertag, is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May. The idea of a day honoring mothers spread in the early twentieth century and reached Europe from the United States. In Germany the holiday has been observed since 1923, and florists were among its most active supporters. Ever since, it has remained a warm family occasion. Children give their mothers flowers, drawings and handmade cards, often including paper hearts. Many families prepare a special breakfast or go for a walk together if the weather is kind. The holiday is movable because it always falls on a Sunday, so the date changes from year to year. In 2026 it is on 10 May. The May sky is calm and springlike, and in the evening, after the family has gathered around the table, we can look together for the familiar constellations. A small gesture, a single flower or a drawn heart, can bring warmth that lasts all year.
