Martin Luther King Jr. Day
19 January 2026 · movable holiday — Dreams can fly, carrying light for everyone!
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed in the United States on the third Monday of January and is a federal holiday. It honors the Baptist minister and civil rights leader who worked for equality and nonviolence. King was born on 15 January 1929 and was assassinated in 1968. The holiday bill was signed in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan, and the day was first observed in 1986. Today many people spend it volunteering and serving their communities, and there are marches, speeches and school events across the country. King's best-known speech, 'I Have a Dream', was delivered in Washington in 1963. Because the holiday is movable, its date changes from year to year, always falling between 15 and 21 January, close to King's birthday. It arrives in the depths of winter, when the nights are long and the sky is often clear and full of stars.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver dove made of pale glowing dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky
