Lucha Libre Day

21 September 2026 — Mask on, I leap over the ropes, and the stars applaud!

Lucha libre (Spanish for „free fight“) is Mexican professional wrestling, where sport meets theatre. Wrestlers step into the ring in bright masks and costumes, and matches often play out the struggle between técnicos (the good guys who follow the rules) and rudos (the rule-breakers). The mask stands for honour: in matches called luchas de apuestas (wager matches), wrestlers put their mask or their hair on the line. The sport took root in Mexico in the 20th century, and many sources say the first major Mexican promotion was founded in 1933 by Salvador Lutteroth. Today lucha libre is part of urban folklore, from the arenas to the masks on market stalls. Fans link 21 September to the beginning of this story – the first wrestling nights staged by Lutteroth in 1933. As for the sky, the day falls just before the September equinox (around 22–23 September), when day and night are nearly equal. Our hero is invented and resembles no real wrestler.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation in motion: a masked wrestler with a flowing star-dust cape, leaping over the ropes of a ring drawn as faint lines of light
