Boxing Day
26 December 2026 — Every box hides a surprise, and today I am sharing it with you!
Boxing Day is observed on 26 December, the day after Christmas. It is best known in the United Kingdom and in several Commonwealth countries, such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand. According to the popular explanation, the name comes from the old custom of wealthy families giving boxes of gifts or money to servants, workers and tradespeople. Churches also collected money for the poor in alms boxes. The date coincides with the feast of Saint Stephen in the Western Christian tradition, which is why it is called St Stephen's Day in Ireland and Catalonia. Today it is a public holiday in the United Kingdom. People visit relatives, go for walks, watch sport such as football matches and horse racing, and hunt for bargains in the sales. The day has no link to the lunar cycle: it is fixed on the calendar. It falls just a few days after the winter solstice, when nights are among the longest of the year and bright winter stars such as Sirius and the constellation Orion light up the sky.
