Cultural and Natural Heritage Day

13 June 2026 · movable holiday — Every old treasure has a story – let us look closer with the magnifier!

In China, Cultural and Natural Heritage Day is marked on the second Saturday of June. It draws attention to the protection of museums, monuments, historic towns, scenic landscapes and traditional crafts. The day is a national observance, but it shares the spirit of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and its World Heritage List, which includes many Chinese sites. Museums and institutions usually organize exhibitions, talks and tours, and some offer free or easier admission. Crafts such as papermaking, porcelain, embroidery and wood carving are often showcased, and visitors may sometimes watch conservators at work. Because the date is movable, it falls on a different day in June each year and follows the calendar rather than any astronomical event. Our little sky guardian is a reminder that caring for the past is a matter of looking closely, whether through a magnifying glass or a telescope. The day was established by China's State Council and has been observed since 2006, originally as Cultural Heritage Day. Since 2017 it has carried its current name, which also covers natural heritage.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a tiny clay guardian figure holding a restorer's brush and a magnifying glass, with no weapon
