Culture Day

3 November 2026 — Every star is a stroke, so I drew you a character for Culture Day!

Culture Day (Bunka no Hi) is celebrated in Japan every year on 3 November and is a national holiday. It is dedicated to the love of freedom and peace and to the promotion of culture, the arts and science. The date coincides with the birthday of Emperor Meiji, which was observed as a holiday until 1947 (from 1927 as Meiji Setsu). The holiday was established in 1948, following the promulgation of Japan's postwar constitution on 3 November 1946, which came into effect on 3 May 1947. On this day the Emperor presents the state Order of Culture and other honours for achievement in the arts and sciences. Across the country there are exhibitions, festivals, concerts, and open museums and schools. Early November weather in Japan is often clear and dry, ideal for walks among autumn leaves and for an evening look at the sky. The holiday follows the Gregorian calendar and has no direct link to a solstice or moon phase.
