Space Day of China

24 April 2026 — Ding-a-ling! Hear that? A starry tune from orbit!

China's Space Day is observed every year on 24 April and has been marked since 2016. The date commemorates the launch of China's first artificial satellite, Dong Fang Hong I (“The East Is Red”), on 24 April 1970. It was carried into orbit by a Long March 1 rocket and became well known for broadcasting the melody of the song “The East Is Red”. With it, China became the fifth country to put its own satellite into orbit. Today the day is an occasion for exhibitions, public lectures, planetarium visits and educational events about space, especially for schoolchildren and students. Satellites like this are among the few human-made objects visible from Earth as slowly moving points of light across the night sky, which makes the day close to anyone who enjoys stargazing. In this way, a small “chime” from the past still inspires new generations.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a small round satellite shaped like a bell, with thin antenna lines and tiny dotted sound waves rippling around it as it travels
