Indigenous Peoples' Day

12 October 2026 · movable holiday — Corn, beans and squash grow together – we are stronger side by side!

Indigenous Peoples' Day in the United States honors the history, cultures and contributions of Native American peoples. It falls on the second Monday of October, the same day as the federal Columbus Day. The idea of an alternative holiday emerged in the second half of the twentieth century, and the first presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples' Day was issued in 2021. Many states, cities and schools mark it with gatherings, music, crafts and stories passed down through generations. Our sky character is a symbol: the Three Sisters – corn, squash and beans. In the traditional farming of many Indigenous peoples they are grown together: corn supports the beans, beans enrich the soil, and broad squash leaves keep moisture in. The day is a reminder of community and care for the land. The date is movable and follows a calendar rule rather than an astronomical event, but October's skies, after the autumn equinox, are lovely for stargazing.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the night sky: a tall corn stalk with a climbing bean vine curling around it and a broad squash leaf trailing below
