Constitution Memorial Day
3 May 2026 — The brush writes and the sky reads: a new page for peace and rights!
Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpō Kinenbi) is observed in Japan every year on 3 May. It marks the day the current constitution took effect on 3 May 1947. The document builds the state on the sovereignty of the people, fundamental human rights and the renunciation of war as a means of settling international disputes. The day is a public holiday and falls within Golden Week, a string of holidays at the end of April and the start of May when many people travel or spend time outdoors. Around the date, meetings, lectures and public discussions about the constitution and its place in society are held across the country. The holiday has a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar and no direct link to lunar phases or the solstices. Still, early May is a pleasant time to watch the spring sky, where the constellations Leo and Ursa Major are well placed in the evening.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and lines like a constellation: a scroll that slowly unrolls into a shining ribbon of light while a calligraphy brush drawn in star-lines writes glowing strokes along it
