Constitution Day
17 September 2026 — We the People – written with a quill of star dust!
On 17 September 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the Constitution of the United States. They did so in the building now known as Independence Hall. The text opens with the famous words 'We the People'. The day took its current name and form in 2004, when Congress designated it Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Before that it was observed as Citizenship Day. It is not a day off, but schools that receive federal funding offer lessons on the Constitution and on the rights and duties of citizens. When 17 September falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, schools hold their programme during the preceding or following week. The date falls in the last days of astronomical summer, just days before the autumnal equinox (around 22–23 September), when day and night are almost equal in length. So the sky quill drifts across a sky already turning towards autumn.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver goose quill made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky
